Satochip is a company that provides secure and innovative solutions for the cryptocurrency industry.
They specialize in creating hardware solutions for crypto asset management, particularly using smart cards (JavaCards) and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Satochip’s products are designed to offer users easy-to-use tools for managing, storing, and transferring cryptocurrencies while ensuring that sensitive data remains protected from online vulnerabilities.

Their products appeal to crypto enthusiasts, investors, and organizations looking for a secure, long-term crypto storage and management solution. The company's emphasis on hardware wallets, cold storage, and secure offline solutions places it in a leading position in the growing market of secure cryptocurrency management.

The challenge: Optimizing and improving Satodime

Satochip was first looking for a tech partner to help them with one of their most popular products – Satodime.

It represents a secure, giftable cryptocurrency card designed to make storing and transferring crypto easy and tangible. It features an EAL6+-certified chip for storing private keys securely and offers compatibility with various cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more. With NFC support, users can manage their assets via a mobile app.

Satochip hired us to help them with crashes and high code complexity. And, we did that successfully, as we built upon the current solution and integrated buying crypto, among other new features, into the app.

The solution: Optimizing their product on multiple levels

Our main goal was to ensure seamless communication between the app and the card, while maintaining top-tier security for users' sensitive crypto data. Here's a breakdown of how exactly we've helped them so far:

    NFC communication

We enabled smooth communication between the app and the card via NFC, a critical component for the usability of the solution. To make this work, we built a custom Java SDK that interfaces with the JavaCard chip. The SDK enables secure, reliable communication between the card and Android devices, ensuring users can easily manage their crypto assets from the palm of their hand.

    Modern app development with Kotlin

To create a responsive and user-friendly experience, we developed the Seedkeeper app using Kotlin, a modern programming language that ensures fast, efficient, and stable app performance. This approach also allowed us to design the app with the latest features while keeping the codebase clean and manageable.

    Top security with EAL6 certification

The real standout of the solution is the EAL6 certified chip. With this, users can rest easy knowing their crypto assets are stored in the most secure environment possible. The chip allows for long-term cold storage of assets, giving users control over their own personal banks – without worrying about online vulnerabilities.

    Offline password and data storage

A unique feature of the Seedkeeper app is its ability to store encrypted passwords and sensitive data offline, secured by a PIN. This offline approach ensures that users' secrets are protected from potential online threats, creating an additional layer of security for long-term data storage.

    The tech stack

    • NFC communication – with custom Javacard code, we developed SDK to communicate using NFC
    • Backup with style – If needed, a complete encrypted backup to another card is available in a few steps and less than a minute
    • Clean, fast, secure – efficient and lightweight but fully featured, apps are secure ways to get into crypto

    What’s next

We’ve helped Satochip build their new application – Seedkeeper – from scratch. It generates and securely stores mnemonic phrases, passwords, masterseeds, and other data on JavaCard.

The V2 of the product has been officially released in November and is definitely one of Satochip’s best sellers. The mobile app has been successfully released on both Android and iOS stores.
